In 2005 I started freelance writing (creative non-fiction) as a hobby. I began with writing dozens of articles for sites known as “content mills”. It was an easy way to get some exposure and find out if anyone wanted to read what I wanted to write about. Though I received only a few dollars here and there for my contributions, I was inspired to pursue a career as a full-time freelance writer. In early 2010, I got my first contract to write for a paying client! And so the adventures began.
As the landscape of freelance writing continues to evolve, content mills continue to fall out of favor – as well they should. They don’t really pay a good writer for the time and effort they/we put into creating a good article. There are still a few places where I post content for general interest, when I can’t find another site that seems like a good fit.
